AI chatbots that provide direct answers, often described as "telling" the user information, were found to be more likely to foster user reliance and dependency. Conversely, AI models that engage users through Socratic questioning, prompting them to "ask" and explore, were more effective in promoting genuine learning and improving users' inherent ability to discern truth. Danry noted that this difference represents a trade-off between the speed of information retrieval and the effort required for deeper learning and skill development. The study's implications suggest that while AI can offer immediate assistance, its design and usage patterns are crucial in determining whether it augments or diminishes users' cognitive abilities over time, particularly in critical areas like media literacy.
