Paddy Pike Unveils Lava Rock Furniture Collection

London-based designer Paddy Pike has officially launched the Figulus collection, a new line of furniture that integrates Pike’s technology-informed design methodology with the inherent creative forces of nature. The sculptural pieces are constructed from genuine lava rock, sourced from Mount Vesuvius, one of Italy's most historically significant volcanoes. This collection aims to forge a connection between ancient geological materials and contemporary aesthetic sensibilities, exploring the intricate interplay between geology, technological innovation, and human artistry. Pike collaborated with Ranieri, a specialist lava rock fabricator situated at the base of Mount Vesuvius, a site famously known for the catastrophic eruption that buried Pompeii in 79 AD. The Figulus collection shares a characteristic aesthetic with Pike's earlier Arnardo collection from 2025, notably its signature inflated, fluid shapes. However, a key distinction lies in the finishing process. While the Arnardo collection featured a mirror-polished steel surface, the Figulus pieces are treated with a glazed finish that requires firing in a kiln. This emphasis on kiln firing reinforces the collection's thematic reliance on fire, not only as a destructive force in volcanic events but also as a transformative element in creative crafts like ceramics. The furniture is available in various colors upon customer request, with the final appearance of each piece significantly influenced by the inherent limitations of the lava rock's production process. A distinctive visual element present in each item is the presence of horizontal lines, which signify areas where the design had to be segmented into smaller components to accommodate the dimensions of Ranieri's kilns. In an interview with Hypebeast, Pike elaborated on the significance of these details, stating that they serve as a method for revealing the material's journey within the final product, an approach he actively seeks to incorporate whenever feasible. He further explained that his work prioritizes bringing forth the unique character of the maker, the material itself, or a combination of these elements into the finished piece. This process-oriented design philosophy is deeply rooted in Pike's academic background, which includes studying mechanical engineering at Edinburgh College. He noted that his academic strengths lay in conceptual understanding and process-based learning, such as in mathematics and physics, rather than rote memorization or extensive writing.
