Seiko Gifts Shohei Ohtani Bespoke Watch Tracking One Million Hours
Seiko Watch Corporation gifted its long-time ambassador, Major League Baseball star Shohei Ohtani, a bespoke wristwatch named the "Seiko Star Time" this week. The unique timepiece was developed over a three-year period, inspired by Ohtani's reflections on his career and future time in baseball. The watch features a novel system of five layered discs capable of displaying cumulative time up to one million hours, a duration exceeding 114 years, distinguishing it from other existing wristwatches.
The design of the Seiko Star Time incorporates celestial imagery, with each disc representing different increments of time, from 24 hours up to one million hours. These discs are adorned with diamonds, intended to evoke a starry sky and symbolize the gradual accumulation of effort and achievement. The watch case is constructed from high-intensity titanium, featuring a box-shaped sapphire crystal and a custom silicone strap specifically fitted for Ohtani's wrist. With a diameter of 41.8 mm and a thickness of 17.4 mm, the watch is designed for both technical innovation and wearability, while maintaining a water resistance of 10 bar.
Seiko Watch Corporation Chairman Shinji Hattori personally presented the Star Time to Ohtani. This gesture marks a significant moment in Ohtani's decade-long partnership with Seiko and highlights a notable achievement in watchmaking. Ohtani expressed his satisfaction with the creation, stating it was "exactly as I had imagined." Seiko emphasized the watch's role as a symbol of cumulative time and human accomplishment. Although the Seiko Star Time is not available for purchase, it demonstrates Seiko's capacity to integrate advanced technical capabilities with compelling narrative, reinforcing the brand's tradition of commemorating significant life events through horology.
