Sakana AI launched Sakana Translate this week, a new feature integrated into its Sakana Chat service. This browser-based tool provides bidirectional translation capabilities between Japanese, English, and Chinese, utilizing the company's proprietary Namazu model series, which has been specifically adapted for Japanese language nuances. The stated goal of Sakana Translate is to offer 'deep translation for Japan,' aiming to preserve context, tone, and register beyond simple word-for-word conversions, addressing perceived shortcomings in general translation tools when dealing with Japanese linguistic subtleties such as honorifics and culturally specific concepts.

Sakana Translate is presented as a free web application accessible with a single account, and it consolidates three distinct functionalities into a unified interface: Translate, Proofread, and Ask. The Translate mode allows users to convert pasted text between the three supported languages, handling up to approximately 5,000 Japanese characters with streaming output and automatic history saving. This mode is designed for tasks like translating emails, slide decks, articles, and web pages.
