OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Terra, a new AI model intended for visual reasoning, computer use, and writing tasks. This model succeeds GPT-5.6 Terra and is now available via the API under the identifier gpt-6.1-terra.

The new model demonstrates performance comparable to GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra in vision and computer use tasks, but at a reduced cost. It achieved 85.5% on MMMU-Pro (Vision) at max effort, slightly behind GPT-6 Astra. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, it scored 50.3%, trailing GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5.

For computer use tasks, GPT-6.1 Terra scored 57.6% on Agents' Last Exam v1 at medium effort, costing $0.29 per task. This represents a significant improvement over GPT-5.6 Terra, which scored 42.6% at $0.84 on the same task. GPT-6 Astra also scored 57.6% but at a higher cost of $4.82 per task.
OpenAI states that GPT-6.1 Terra completes tasks over three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. On the OSWorld 2.1 offline set, Terra achieved 66.7% at medium effort and 74.2% at max effort.
