Needles Unveils Inaugural Collaboration with Heritage Brands Tailor Toyo and Sun Surf

Needles, a prominent Japanese streetwear label known for its distinctive aesthetic and reinterpretations of classic American workwear, has announced its inaugural collaborative collection. This significant venture sees Needles partnering with two esteemed Japanese heritage imprints: Tailor Toyo and Sun Surf. This collaboration marks the first time all three distinct Japanese brands have joined forces, aiming to fuse their unique design philosophies and rich historical craftsmanship into a cohesive apparel capsule.

The collection is brought to life through a campaign featuring the acclaimed Japanese actor Kenichi Takito, who embodies the spirit of the collaboration. At the heart of the collection is the Needles x Tailor Toyo Souvenir Jacket. Tailor Toyo, a brand with decades of experience in producing authentic traditional souvenir jackets (often referred to as 'sukajan'), lends its expertise to this piece. The jacket is inspired by a classic U.S. Navy silhouette, a common theme in vintage sukajan designs that often featured military insignia and imagery. Constructed from heavy wool, chosen for its warmth and premium feel, the jacket is meticulously detailed. Across the back, an embroidered Papillon logo, Needles' iconic butterfly motif, takes center stage. This is complemented by intricate embroidery that lists cities where Needles has conducted past visual campaigns, adding a personal and narrative layer that speaks to the brand's global journey and influences.

Complementing the jacket are the Needles x Sun Surf Hawaiian Shirts. Sun Surf is renowned for its dedication to recreating vintage Hawaiian shirts with exceptional accuracy and quality. For this collaboration, the traditional rayon fabric typically used for Hawaiian shirts has been replaced with an autumn-ready flannel fabric, offering a cozier and more substantial feel suitable for cooler weather. Sun Surf has meticulously selected two archival Papillon-themed motifs from its extensive design library. These distinct graphic patterns and colorways have been thoughtfully applied to the shirts, ensuring they resonate with Needles' characteristic aesthetic identity and create a harmonious visual language across the entire collaborative range.

The Needles x Tailor Toyo and Sun Surf collection is scheduled for release on Saturday, October 3, at 11:30 a.m. JST (Japan Standard Time). Availability will be through Nepenthes retail locations, the physical stores operated by the Nepenthes company which also distributes Needles, and via the official Nepenthes online store, providing accessibility to a global audience.
