Iran fires missiles at US bases carrying images of killed commanders
Iran launched missiles targeting US bases in the Middle East on January 8, 2020, according to Iranian state media which released accompanying video footage. The strikes were in retaliation for the US drone strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani on January 3, 2020. Iranian state television reported that 22 missiles were fired at the Ain al-Asad air base in Iraq and another base in Erbil. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating that they were a "slap" against the United States and that any further aggression would result in a more severe response. The IRGC also warned regional allies of the US against allowing their territories to be used for attacks against Iran. Following the missile launches, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stated on Twitter that the strikes were a "proportionate" response to the killing of Soleimani and that Iran did not seek further escalation. However, he also noted that the operation was concluded. The US Department of Defense confirmed that Iran had launched the missiles but stated that no US personnel were harmed in the attacks. President Donald Trump later tweeted that "All is well!" and indicated that an assessment of casualties and damage was underway.
