Honda Recalls 880,000 Vehicles for Rapidly Rusting Subframes

Honda announced a recall of approximately 880,000 vehicles on March 14, 2024, due to a defect in the rear subframes that can lead to premature rusting and potential suspension failure. The affected models include the 2016-2021 Honda Pilot, 2017-2021 Honda Ridgeline, 2019-2021 Honda Passport, and 2016-2021 Acura MDX. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rear subframe is susceptible to corrosion, particularly in areas exposed to road salt. Over time, this rust can weaken the subframe, potentially leading to the separation of suspension components from the vehicle's body. Such a failure could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Honda stated that dealers will inspect the subframes and, if necessary, replace them free of charge. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail starting May 13, 2024, with instructions on how to schedule their recall service. This recall addresses a significant safety concern that could impact the structural integrity and drivability of these popular SUV and truck models.
