Toyota Recalls 48,280 Tacoma Trucks for Shock Absorber Issue

Toyota is initiating a recall for 48,280 of its Tacoma TRD Off-Road pickup trucks manufactured between 2022 and 2023. The recall specifically addresses a potential defect in the external reservoirs of the Bilstein shock absorbers, which are standard equipment on these particular models. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from the possibility that these external reservoirs could detach from the shock absorber assembly. This detachment could occur due to insufficient adhesion during the manufacturing process of the shock absorbers. The potential consequence of the reservoir separating from the shock absorber is the leakage of nitrogen gas and hydraulic fluid. This leakage could lead to a gradual loss of damping performance in the affected suspension component. A loss of damping performance can manifest as increased vehicle bouncing or instability, potentially impacting the truck's handling and control. Toyota has stated that if the shock absorber reservoir detaches completely, it could pose a road hazard to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. The company has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this specific issue as of the recall announcement. The affected vehicles are equipped with Bilstein shocks that feature these external reservoirs as part of their performance-oriented suspension system, designed to enhance off-road capability and on-road comfort for the TRD Off-Road trim. Toyota plans to notify owners of the affected trucks by mail starting on August 1, 2024. The notification will instruct owners to schedule an appointment with an authorized Toyota dealer. Dealers will inspect the shock absorbers and, if the external reservoir is found to be improperly adhered, they will replace the entire shock absorber assembly at no cost to the owner. This proactive measure by Toyota aims to ensure the continued safety and performance of the recalled Tacoma trucks, addressing a manufacturing anomaly before it can lead to any adverse incidents.
