Epic Games is instructing employees to utilize artificial intelligence for the development of its Disney game, which is set to feature Marvel and Star Wars characters.
This directive follows a previous decision to lay off 1,000 employees in March due to a "downturn in Fortnite engagement." The Disney project, originally slated for a March release, has been delayed because the company underestimated the necessary personnel for its production.
The game is now described as an "AI first" project, with plans for "full AI workflows" and "generated" content, signaling a move away from "hand-written code." This announcement reportedly caused surprise among Epic Games staff, many of whom had continued working after significant layoffs.
A spokesperson for Epic Games confirmed the company's embrace of "AI-accelerated development," stating that "Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do" will lead the initiative. Disney has not yet commented on the development, but the report notes Disney's prior interest in incorporating user-generated AI content into its Disney+ app.
