Anthropic Launches Claude Science for Research
Anthropic announced Claude Science on Tuesday, a new flagship product aimed at supporting scientific research, mirroring the function of Claude Code for software engineering. This AI model is designed to autonomously perform complex tasks based on high-level instructions and is equipped with specialized tools for computational biology and drug development. Claude Science is now accessible to all paid Claude subscribers.
This launch signifies Anthropic's increased focus on AI applications within the life sciences. Previously, in October, the company introduced plug-ins under the "Claude for Life Sciences" initiative, enabling Claude to interact with scientific software and databases. However, Claude Science represents a more comprehensive, standalone product offering.
Anthropic's decision to position Claude Science alongside established products like Claude Code and Claude Cowork highlights the company's commitment to advancing AI in scientific fields. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic's head of life sciences, stated that this product is crucial to their mission of developing AI for humanity's long-term well-being, with life sciences offering the greatest potential for impact.
The field of AI in science has seen significant advancements, notably from Google DeepMind. CEO Demis Hassabis and researcher John Jumper were recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on the AlphaFold model, which has also contributed to advancements in meteorology and materials science.
