ChatGPT and Reddit Face Stricter EU Online Safety Rules

OpenAI's ChatGPT, the social media forum Reddit, and the gaming platform Roblox have been officially designated as "very large online platforms" (VLOPs) by the European Commission. This classification, announced on Monday, subjects these services to the European Union's stringent Digital Services Act (DSA), its flagship online safety legislation. The DSA imposes significant new obligations on platforms that reach a substantial user base within the EU, aiming to create a safer online environment by tackling illegal content and protecting user rights. As VLOPs, ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox must now implement robust measures to swiftly remove illegal content, such as hate speech or counterfeit goods, from their platforms. They are also required to enhance protections for minors, ensuring their privacy and security are paramount. Furthermore, these platforms must provide users with greater transparency regarding content moderation decisions and offer effective redress mechanisms. The European Commission's decision reflects its ongoing efforts to adapt existing digital regulations to the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence and online services. The DSA, which came into full effect in February 2024, provides a comprehensive framework for online content moderation and platform accountability.
