Agencies Struggle to Measure AI Search Visibility

In AgencyAnalytics' 2026 Marketing Agency Benchmarks Report, based on responses from 494 agency professionals, 66% stated that assisting clients in appearing in AI-driven search results is the top new service clients are requesting. This demand for AI search visibility has rapidly ascended to become the primary client request, surpassing established services like performance-based paid ads and short-form video. The report highlights that AI search has transitioned from a nascent curiosity to the leading client priority within a single year, indicating a substantial and escalating demand.

Despite this surge in demand, agencies face significant measurement challenges. The report indicates that 64% of agencies identified Google's AI Overviews as their top industry concern. Concurrently, 48% of respondents reported an inability to reliably track individuals who discover a brand through AI tools. Furthermore, 47% of agencies cannot attribute conversions across the multi-session research journeys that AI-assisted discovery facilitates. Traditional rank tracking methods, designed for traditional search engine results pages (SERPs) featuring blue links, are insufficient for assessing AI-generated answers, as they cannot determine if a client is mentioned, how they are described, or which sources influenced the AI's response.

This inability to provide concrete data leaves many agencies unable to answer a common client query: "How are we performing in ChatGPT?" The report suggests that agencies often have to admit they lack the capability to measure this, a difficult admission for clients who are paying for performance insights. The demand for AI search visibility has outpaced the development of reliable measurement tools, creating a gap between client expectations and agency capabilities.

However, AI search visibility is becoming less of a "black box." The report outlines four key metrics that are currently trackable and can provide a tangible answer to client inquiries. These include visibility (whether a client appears when a relevant prompt is used), position (how prominently they are featured), sentiment (the tone and nature of the AI's description), and citations (the URLs the AI relies on, revealing content influence). By tracking these four metrics across AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini over time, agencies can present clients with data-driven charts that address the question of their presence and performance in AI-generated search results.
