You probably haven’t heard of ‘desire lines,’ but they just reinvented this airport’s concourse

Frankfurt Airport's new Terminal 3 building features a concourse designed by the Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) that deviates from typical airport layouts by prioritizing a public square aesthetic over aggressive retail spaces. Instead of a maze-like structure that forces passengers through shops, LAVA's design incorporates islands with cafes, lounge areas, and planters, woven together with pathways and surrounded by retail outlets. This approach aims to create a more pleasant experience for travelers, whether they are rushing to a gate or leisurely browsing. LAVA co-founder Alexander Rieck stated that the goal was to move away from the "maze" design of other airports and explore what makes a shopping experience engaging. The placement and design of these elements were informed by thousands of digital simulations analyzing pedestrian flow, identifying "desire lines"—the natural pathways people take through a space based on their needs, such as hurrying, relaxing, or shopping.
