Xiaomi gets approval to build extended-range EVs, plans full-size SUV to rival Li Auto
Xiaomi received regulatory approval from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on May 20, 2024, to produce extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). This approval marks a significant step for Xiaomi as it expands its automotive offerings beyond pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The company plans to launch its first EREV, a full-size SUV codenamed "Kunlun N3," which measures over 5.3 meters in length. This new model is positioned to compete directly with Li Auto's successful L9 SUV, a segment where Li Auto has established a strong market presence. The "Kunlun N3" will feature a hybrid powertrain, combining an internal combustion engine as a generator with electric motors, allowing for longer driving ranges and reduced range anxiety compared to traditional BEVs. This strategic move by Xiaomi aims to capture a larger share of the growing new energy vehicle market in China by offering a more versatile option for consumers.
