xAI Sues Grok User for Child Abuse Material

Elon Musk’s AI venture xAI filed a federal lawsuit in Texas this week against Terry Wayne Harwood, accusing him of using the Grok chatbot to generate child sexual abuse material. The civil complaint alleges that the 67-year-old South Carolina resident deliberately bypassed Grok’s safeguards to convert standard photographs into explicit deepfakes without consent.

This legal action follows Harwood’s arrest in February 2026, when he was charged with eight felony counts of sexual exploitation by the South Carolina Attorney General as part of an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force sweep. xAI asserts that some of the illicit files leading to those criminal charges were generated or modified using Grok’s image-editing capabilities.

The lawsuit represents a significant pushback from xAI after facing considerable scrutiny and separate class-action lawsuits concerning Grok's image generation safeguards. The company experienced backlash and a March lawsuit from teenagers who claimed the tool produced inappropriate images of them, particularly after rolling out an unfiltered image generation mode last year.

Elon Musk had previously warned users on X that employing Grok for illegal content would result in severe repercussions, comparable to uploading illicit material. In an effort to combat platform abuse, xAI reported suspending over 52,000 accounts.
