AI Productivity Masks Team Burnout, Study Finds

Artificial intelligence tools are making it harder for managers to detect early signs of employee burnout, as AI can mask declining performance. Traditionally, a leader might notice a team member taking longer to complete tasks, indicating overload or insufficient rest. However, with AI handling parts of the workload, individuals can maintain their usual output levels even when approaching burnout.

A study involving 442 tech company employees revealed a weaker correlation between burnout and decreased productivity among those who extensively used AI. This shift challenges established management practices for monitoring team wellbeing.

Researchers at the University of Lausanne surveyed 83 managers and found that 82% reported saving an average of 2 hours and 50 minutes per week due to generative AI. Contrary to expectations, over half of these managers used the saved time to increase their workload, while 36% were unaware of the time savings. AI not only enables individuals to take on more tasks but also gradually elevates the expected workload and complexity for roles, as noted by an architect who observed junior developers becoming more independent with AI assistance.
