Beijing-based Moonshot AI released its Kimi K3 artificial intelligence model in mid-July, making the model's full weights publicly available on July 27. This release has become a significant event in the AI community, intensifying the debate surrounding the distribution of highly capable AI models. The core of the discussion revolves around whether advanced AI should be proprietary, controlled by individual companies, predominantly U.S. tech firms, or if it should follow the open-source tradition of transparent and free distribution. Moonshot AI reported that Kimi K3 achieved frontier-level performance in tasks related to coding, agentic capabilities, reasoning, and knowledge acquisition.
