Weather tracker: Severe thunderstorms sweep Europe and east Asia

Severe thunderstorms swept across the Balkans last week, causing widespread destruction. The storms formed due to unstable hot air over the Adriatic Sea interacting with a southward-plunging cold front. On June 10, the Slovenian Environment Agency reported wind gusts of 65 mph at Ljubljana airport and 23 mm of heavy rain in Kranj as the cold front began its southward movement. Concurrently, France experienced an unusual heatwave in its northern and western regions, with temperatures significantly above average for this time of year. This weather pattern highlights a period of extreme meteorological events across Europe, with differing impacts from destructive storms to unseasonable warmth.
