Washington Awaits Next Move on Stalled Bipartisan Housing Bill

President Donald Trump has placed the bipartisan 21st Century Road to Housing Act on hold, delaying its signing on Friday. Trump has indicated his priority is the passage of an unrelated voter identification bill, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The housing legislation, which passed the House with a 358-32 vote on Tuesday and the Senate with an 85-5 vote on Monday, includes 45 provisions designed to reduce regulatory hurdles and stimulate new home construction. Trump stated on Wednesday that the housing bill, despite his earlier support, was "of minor importance" compared to the SAVE Act, emphasizing the need to "protect our sacred elections." A spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed on Thursday that the housing bill would be sent to President Trump. The President has a 10-day window to sign or veto the bill; if Congress is in session and no action is taken, it will automatically become law. While the legislative vote margins suggest a veto could be overridden, this would necessitate Republicans voting against Trump's wishes. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a key architect of the housing bill, expressed uncertainty on Friday regarding the bill's timeline, stating "We don't know what happens now." Housing experts in Washington generally anticipate a resolution to the current impasse.
