Vietnam's VinSpace Taps SpaceX for 2027 Satellite Launch

Vietnamese aerospace company VinSpace announced on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, that it has secured a contract with SpaceX to deploy its inaugural satellites into orbit. The launch is scheduled to occur in 2027 aboard a SpaceX Transporter rideshare mission, a service that consolidates multiple customer satellites onto a single rocket to optimize launch costs. This initiative marks a significant step for Vietnam's developing space sector, as the nation endeavors to bolster its capabilities in space technology and applications.

VinSpace, a subsidiary of the prominent Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, was established in November 2025. The company plans to develop and operate the satellites itself, utilizing them to test its proprietary technologies in an operational space environment and to lay the groundwork for future commercial ventures. This move aligns with Vingroup's broader strategy of substantial investment in high-technology sectors, including electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics, and space exploration, reflecting Vietnam's aspiration to emerge as a leading economy in Asia. Vingroup, founded by tycoon Pham Nhat Vuong, is Vietnam's largest privately held corporation, with a diverse business portfolio spanning real estate, retail, healthcare, education, and tourism.

Vietnam has been actively pursuing the development of its aerospace capabilities for several decades, though it currently holds a modest position in the global space industry. The country's prior satellite launches include a telecommunications satellite in 2008 and another in 2012. More recently, in March, Vietnam inaugurated a substantial space science and technology center located in Hanoi's Hoa Lac High-Tech Park. This facility is designed to enhance the nation's capacity for satellite development and the utilization of space-derived data. Vietnam has set an ambitious target to become a mid-tier space power within Southeast Asia by the year 2030.

In a related development earlier in the year, Vietnam granted SpaceX permission to operate its Starlink satellite internet service within the country. Some industry analysts interpreted this decision as a strategic move by Vietnam to potentially mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs. Starlink has since commenced accepting service orders in Vietnam, further integrating the nation into the global satellite communications network and underscoring its growing engagement with international space technology providers.
