Swiss haute horlogerie manufacturer Ulysse Nardin is expanding its avant-garde Freak [ONE] collection with the introduction of two highly exclusive, limited-edition timepieces: the Freak [ONE BLUE ENAMEL] and the Freak [ONE GUILLOCHÉ]. These new releases are particularly significant as they coincide with two major milestones for the brand: Ulysse Nardin's 180th anniversary, a testament to its enduring legacy in watchmaking since its founding in 1846, and the 25th anniversary of the original Freak's groundbreaking debut in 2001. The original Freak, launched by the brand in 2001, was revolutionary for its time, notably for dispensing with a traditional dial, hands, and crown, instead using a rotating bridge to indicate the time. These new iterations build upon that radical design philosophy. Both the Freak [ONE BLUE ENAMEL] and Freak [ONE GUILLOCHÉ] are presented in robust 44mm titanium cases, offering a contemporary and durable housing for their complex mechanical movements. Powering these exceptional watches is the in-house UN-240 automatic caliber, a sophisticated movement designed to showcase Ulysse Nardin's technical prowess. Each of these striking new models is strictly limited to just 99 pieces worldwide, underscoring their rarity and desirability. The pricing for these exclusive timepieces begins at $80,000 USD. The Freak [ONE BLUE ENAMEL] places a strong emphasis on traditional decorative arts, particularly enameling, and vibrant color. For the first time in the Freak [ONE] line, the watch features a white-gold hour disc that has been meticulously engraved with a radiating sunray pattern. This intricate engraving is then brought to life by hand with vivid blue enamel at Ulysse Nardin's renowned Donzé Cadrans atelier, a specialist in traditional decorative techniques. The enameling process is a labor-intensive art form, involving the application of the enamel in successive layers, followed by firing at approximately 800°C to achieve a deep, saturated hue. Each layer is carefully controlled to prevent cracking or bubbling. The final stage involves meticulous polishing, which creates a lustrous, glass-like surface that beautifully accentuates the mesmerizing rotation of the movement's flying carousel. This model is complemented by a white ballistic-textured rubber strap, adding a touch of sporty elegance. In contrast, the Freak [ONE GUILLOCHÉ] adopts a more understated yet equally refined aesthetic, focusing on the intricate art of guilloché. The hour disc on this model is adorned with a traditional diamond-pattern known as "maille." This complex pattern is initially created by hand by skilled artisans. It is then transferred to the production discs using the time-honored flinqué stamping process, a technique that requires immense precision. Following the stamping, the discs undergo a sand-toned CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) treatment. This advanced finishing technique provides a subtle, matte texture that creates a sophisticated visual contrast against the light-grey titanium case. The Guilloché edition is fitted with a matching grey ballistic-textured rubber strap, maintaining a cohesive and elegant look. At the heart of both the Blue Enamel and Guilloché editions lies the UN-240 automatic caliber. This innovative movement is engineered for visual spectacle and mechanical efficiency.
