TV tonight: the American version of Martin Clunes comedy Doc Martin

Sky One premiered "Best Medicine" this week, an American adaptation of the British comedy "Doc Martin." The series stars Josh Charles as Martin Best, a doctor who, much like the original character played by Martin Clunes, struggles with a poor bedside manner and a desire for solitude. Best moves to a small fishing village in Maine, expecting a quiet life, but his hopes are quickly challenged by the demanding and chatty residents. Reviewer Phil Harrison described Charles as a "lugubrious lead" and the show as "a little bland." The series is based on the original "Doc Martin" which focused on a surgeon who becomes a general practitioner in Cornwall. The premise of an emotionally detached but skilled doctor attempting to navigate a close-knit community remains central to the new US version.
