AI Agents Surpass Human Web Traffic, Rewiring Internet

The "Dead Internet Theory," once a fringe idea, has become a measurable reality as AI agents now outnumber human activity online. Cybersecurity firms report a significant crossover point where bots began generating more webpage requests than humans. Cloudflare, a major internet security provider, indicated this shift occurred in June, with bots accounting for 57.5% of webpage requests. Thales, a data security firm, placed the crossover earlier, in 2023, noting in its "Bad Bot Report" that bot traffic reached 53% in 2026. These discrepancies highlight the challenge in establishing a universal metric for bot traffic, as no single entity has a complete view of web activity, according to Rudy Yang, an analyst at Pitchbook. Yang stated that while data is incomplete, observed trends consistently point to increased bot activity, with agentic AI significantly contributing to browser activity.

The growth in agentic AI, defined as bots that actively interact with the web by clicking links and filling forms, has been particularly dramatic. HUMAN Security's 2026 State of AI Traffic & Cyberthreat Benchmark Report documented a 7,851% year-over-year increase in traffic generated by these agents. In contrast, scraper traffic saw a 597% increase over the same period. While AI training crawlers still represent a substantial portion (67.5%) of AI-driven traffic, their share of the overall AI traffic is decreasing. This rapid acceleration has surprised even those monitoring bot activity. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince had previously forecast that bots would not exceed human traffic until the end of 2027, making the actual crossover more than a year ahead of his prediction.
