Trump Seeks Air Force One Upgrades

President Donald Trump announced this week that the new Air Force One, acquired for $400 million, will undergo further upgrades within approximately one month. Trump stated the aircraft "has a lot of capability" but requires additional enhancements. The Boeing 747-8, gifted by Qatar last year, has experienced a complex rollout, including a rushed retrofit and ongoing security concerns. Initial upgrades involved new engines, airstairs, an additional exterior door, a new communications system, and a new paint job, completed under a compressed timeline.

Despite these modifications, the aircraft reportedly still lacks advanced security measures. President Trump took the plane for its inaugural flight to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opening earlier this month. However, following a flight to Turkey for a NATO summit, he opted for a different aircraft for the return journey. Trump attributed this switch to "old time's sake," but the New York Times reported it was at the urging of the Secret Service due to the absence of defensive countermeasures, such as advanced antimissile capabilities, and concerns stemming from heightened tensions in the Iran war.

The New York Times' reporting on these security issues led the Trump administration to subpoena journalists from the publication, a move the Times is contesting in court. Senate Democrats have also raised criticisms regarding the aircraft's acquisition, labeling it as potentially corrupt and demanding greater transparency in the work performed on the plane.
