Trump Renews Effort to Remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook

President Donald Trump has restarted his efforts to remove Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve's board of governors, following a recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the independence of Fed governors. ABC News reported that Cook received official notice from the White House indicating her removal was "considering" and provided her with a three-week period to respond to the allegations. Lisa Cook, appointed by President Biden, holds a significant position as one of the twelve members of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the body responsible for setting the Federal Reserve's benchmark interest rates. Trump's allegations against Cook center on claims of mortgage fraud, which she has vehemently denied. Following Trump's initial attempt to remove her, Cook initiated legal action, suing for wrongful termination. The investigation into the alleged fraud involves three specific properties. In a statement released to Realtor.com®, Cook's legal representatives, Abbe D. Lowell and Norm Eisen, characterized the allegations as "baseless now as they were a year ago when President Trump tried to remove Governor Cook and interfere with the independence of the Federal Reserve." They further asserted that "no matter what President Trump tries to do next, this much is clear under the facts and Supreme Court precedent—there is no valid cause for removing Governor Cook." The legal team pledged to "challenge this latest pretext and preserve her position and the historic role of the Fed." A pivotal Supreme Court decision in June temporarily halted the termination proceedings while the investigation was ongoing. In a 5-4 majority opinion, the court rejected Trump's attempt to summarily dismiss Cook. Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in a concurring opinion, stated that the ruling was based on "the longstanding historical practice and understanding that the Federal Reserve is an independent agency whose governors enjoy for-cause removal protection consistent with Article II of the Constitution.” Following this judicial decision, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction on his Truth Social platform, describing the court's ruling in the Cook case as based on "a strictly procedural basis." He declared, "We will take appropriate action immediately to make sure that someone who has committed wrongdoing will not be making vital decisions concerning the Welfare of the United States of America!"
