Trump Lifts Tariffs on Irish Whiskey, Maintains Canadian Sanctions

Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday the removal of tariffs on Irish whiskey, a decision that significantly benefits Irish distillers by eliminating a 10% import tax. This move, made during his attendance at the Irish Open held at his resort in Doonbeg, Ireland, addresses a long-standing concern for the Irish spirits industry. Trump stated that he agreed to lift the tariffs after discussions with the Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) and golfer Shane Lowry, who had both appealed to him regarding the "unfair" trade measures. The U.S. represents the primary export market for Irish whiskey, and the removal of these tariffs, which were previously 15% before being reduced to 10% in July, is expected to restore a competitive balance against U.K. whiskey producers. In April, Trump had already announced the lifting of certain tariffs on U.K. whiskey, including spirits from Northern Ireland. The Irish Whiskey Association "heartily welcomed" the announcement, noting that Irish whiskey exports were valued at nearly $520 million last year. The association also highlighted that Irish distillers had purchased over $90 million worth of U.S. whiskey, underscoring the reciprocal economic relationship. In contrast to the favorable treatment for Irish whiskey, Trump indicated that multiple Canadian products, including alcohol, would continue to face heavy tariffs and import bans.
