Toronto Air Quality Worst Globally Amid Wildfire Smoke

Toronto experienced the worst air quality on Earth on June 7, 2024, as smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed the city. The IQAir World Air Quality Report ranked Toronto as the most polluted city, surpassing Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and New Delhi, India. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Toronto reached levels considered "very unhealthy" and "hazardous" at various points throughout the day, prompting health advisories for residents.

This severe air pollution event is a direct consequence of extensive wildfires burning across Canada, particularly in Quebec and Ontario. The smoke plumes traveled hundreds of miles south, impacting air quality in numerous US cities. By June 7, cities like Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland also reported unhealthy AQI levels, with projections indicating further degradation. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued air quality alerts for several states in the Midwest and Northeast.

Health officials advised vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, to stay indoors and limit outdoor activities. For the general population, wearing N95 masks was recommended when venturing outside. The prolonged exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) poses significant health risks, including respiratory irritation, asthma exacerbation, and long-term cardiovascular issues. The situation highlighted the transboundary nature of environmental challenges and the far-reaching impacts of climate change-fueled wildfires.

The scale of these fires is unprecedented for this early in the season, attributed to dry conditions and high temperatures.
