AI Design Quality Rises, Taste Becomes New Frontier

The quality of AI-generated website designs is rapidly improving, with experts noting a significant increase in output quality over the past year. Ben Blumenrose, co-founder and managing partner at venture capital firm Designer Fund and a designer with two decades of experience, observes that AI tools are now producing results that are "five times better than what the same kind of tools did a year ago." While he can still identify AI-generated sites by certain stylistic tells, such as an overabundance of "pills," floating dashboards, and gradients, he anticipates that within six months to a year, it will become very difficult even for him to distinguish between human and AI-created designs. This rapid advancement signifies a shift in the AI industry's focus from basic correctness to more subjective creative qualities.

Historically, the AI industry concentrated on ensuring AI outputs were factually accurate and technically sound, such as generating human hands with the correct number of fingers or essays that avoid mixed metaphors. However, as these foundational aspects have largely been mastered, the challenge has evolved to creating AI outputs that can genuinely impress or persuade experts. The development of "taste," or at least a sophisticated approximation of it, has emerged as a critical new frontier in AI model development. This involves moving beyond objective metrics to encompass subjective aesthetic judgments and creative nuances that have traditionally been the domain of human expertise.

A growing number of startups are now aiming to encode taste into AI systems, promising to imbue AI with a discerning aesthetic sensibility. Concurrently, major AI research laboratories are exploring methods to enable their models to excel in subjective creative domains like writing and design. Anthropic's Claude Design, launched in April, is cited as an example of this trend, having already incorporated a distinct aesthetic that is beginning to proliferate across the internet. The challenge lies in replicating the nuanced and individual nature of human taste, which is shaped by a complex interplay of social, cultural, and professional experiences.

Blumenrose's own firm, Designer Fund, has invested in Framer, a no-code website design platform that leverages AI. The ongoing progress in AI's creative capabilities suggests a future where AI-generated designs will not only meet but potentially exceed human standards in certain aspects, blurring the lines between human and machine creativity. The industry's efforts to refine evaluation metrics, rubrics, and automated testing tools are crucial in this transition, pushing AI models towards a more sophisticated understanding and application of aesthetic principles. The ability to generate designs that resonate on a deeper, more subjective level is now a key objective for AI developers.
