In Gabrielle Grace's first-grade class at Sand Creek Elementary in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, students are demonstrating improved writing abilities, with some, like 6-year-old Dean, completing assignments quickly and confidently. Grace noted that many of her students struggled with writing sentences at the start of the year but now produce organized, complete sentences with ease.

Across various grade levels, teachers express concern over students' fundamental writing deficiencies, including issues with spelling and punctuation. In upper elementary grades, where students are expected to write paragraphs and short essays, many still lack the foundational skills needed to write at length. This decline in writing proficiency has prompted some school districts to re-evaluate their teaching methods, particularly in response to low scores on state writing assessments.

The Douglas County School District, serving 61,000 students, has increased professional development for teachers focused on evidence-based writing approaches and is prioritizing explicit writing instruction for students.
