Met Gala 2027 to Honor John Galliano with Major Retrospective

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has unveiled plans for its highly anticipated Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition, which will be a landmark retrospective dedicated to the career of the acclaimed British fashion designer John Galliano. Titled "John Galliano: Horizons," the exhibition promises to be the first major museum retrospective to comprehensively examine the full breadth of Galliano's four-decade-long career. It is scheduled to be on public view at The Met Fifth Avenue from May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028. These include his impactful period at Givenchy, his transformative decade at Christian Dior, and his current role at Maison Margiela, where he leads the Artisanal line. The exhibition will draw extensively from the deep and rich archives of The Costume Institute, showcasing a comprehensive collection that includes iconic garments, intricate accessories, detailed sketches, personal research books, and toiles (prototype garments). The retrospective will culminate with a presentation of his most recent work, specifically his Spring/Summer 2024 Maison Margiela Artisanal collection, demonstrating the continued evolution of his creative vision. The curation is thoughtfully organized into three distinct thematic sections: "Bearings," "Horizons," and "Atlas of Transformation." Notably, the "Bearings" section is set to directly and thoughtfully address a pivotal and controversial period in Galliano's career, examining his conduct in 2010 and 2011, his subsequent dismissal from Christian Dior, and the ongoing and complex cultural dialogue surrounding accountability, redemption, and the enduring impact of one's professional and personal legacy.
