Tesla announced that unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) in customer-owned vehicles is now projected for Q2 2027. This latest timeline extends a promise made by Elon Musk to FSD buyers over the past decade.
However, Tesla's AI chief, Ashok Elluswamy, clarified on the Q3 2026 earnings call that this FSD version will operate within designated Robotaxi zones. Owners will be able to integrate their vehicles into Tesla's managed Robotaxi fleet, rather than having cars that can drive them to any destination.
This development signifies a shift in the scope of Tesla's autonomous driving ambitions for its customer base, focusing on a fleet-based, zone-restricted model for the near future.
