Ome Dezin Unveils Hollywood Hills Restoration: A 4,500 Sq Ft Sanctuary Blending Nature and Design

Los Angeles-based design firm Ome Dezin has completed an extensive restoration of a 4,500-square-foot residence situated in the prestigious Hollywood Hills. This significant property, resting on over an acre of land and accessed via a private gated drive, was originally conceived in 1997 by architect Jeffrey Mills. Mills' initial design prioritized an abundance of natural light and a fluid connection between the interior living spaces and the surrounding environment. Over its history, the home has accumulated a notable past, having previously functioned as a sophisticated art gallery and later as the private sanctuary of a prominent Hollywood actor, underscoring its allure and desirability within the entertainment industry.

In undertaking the meticulous restoration, Ome Dezin's primary objective was to honor and preserve the property's unique architectural heritage while simultaneously imbuing it with a thoroughly reimagined aesthetic. The firm's approach involved a deep engagement with the original architectural intent and the inherent beauty of the surrounding woodland landscape. This resulted in a comprehensive transformation, with Ome Dezin reporting that approximately 99% of the home's interior surfaces were altered to further dissolve the perceived boundary between the indoor and outdoor realms. The chosen material palette is a testament to this philosophy, featuring an interplay of warm, inviting woods, richly veined natural stones that add depth and character, sleek and durable stainless steel, and expansive glass elements that maximize natural light and views. This carefully curated selection of materials fosters a serene and tranquil atmosphere, ensuring the home feels intrinsically connected to its verdant setting.

A particularly captivating feature within the restored interior is a bespoke kitchen pantry. This unique space is distinguished by its custom stained-glass doors, which serve not only as a visual focal point but also as an innovative design element. A strategically positioned, hidden window behind these glass panels allows sunlight to stream through, casting beautiful, dappled highlights of color and natural light into both the kitchen and the adjacent hallway. This artistic touch infuses the area with a warm and inviting ambiance.

Perhaps the most striking and avant-garde addition to the property is a newly constructed, detached mirrored structure. This architectural intervention is designed to house a luxurious sauna and a fully appointed bathroom. Drawing inspiration from Doug Aitken's renowned "Mirage" installation – a famous mirror-clad home that appeared to vanish into the desert landscape – this detached building is engineered to blend almost imperceptibly into the surrounding forest. Its mirrored exterior reflects the natural environment, effectively camouflaging its presence and minimizing its visual impact. The structure is further enhanced by a distinctive circular cutout, an architectural detail that not only adds a unique aesthetic element but also serves to further integrate the building with its natural context.
