STAT+: Edison Scientific Tapped by Metsera for Biotech Creation

Edison Scientific, an AI scientist company, has been engaged by Metsera to develop new biotechnology ventures. The company, founded in late 2025 with $70 million in venture funding, aims to accelerate scientific discovery by providing scientists with autonomous AI agents. This commercial pivot for the organization, originally conceived as a nonprofit called FutureHouse, followed significant interest from major pharmaceutical companies.

FutureHouse was established in 2023 by CEO Sam Rodriques, who previously led the Applied Biotechnology Lab at the Francis Crick Institute, and co-founder Andrew White, a former chemical engineering professor at the University of Rochester. Rodriques recounted instances where top-tier drugmakers approached the nonprofit, with one offering $30 million for access to their AI agents for drug discovery. Executives from these companies expressed that while they could build similar AI capabilities using platforms from OpenAI or Anthropic, FutureHouse's agents were considered superior, akin to "the Ferrari of agents."

The substantial inbound interest from the pharmaceutical sector prompted Rodriques and White to spin off Edison Scientific as a commercial entity. This strategic move recognized the market demand for their advanced AI technology in a business context. The company's core mission remains to scale scientific discovery, now through a dedicated commercial enterprise focused on creating and advancing new biotechs.
