SpeakON Ships MagSafe AI Voice Button With Microphone

SpeakON has introduced a new hardware device designed to streamline voice input for iPhone users, addressing the output limitations of existing dictation tools. The SpeakON device is a 25-gram magnetic button that attaches to the back of an iPhone and features its own microphone. Unlike traditional dictation apps that capture raw audio including fillers and false starts, SpeakON aims to deliver "finished text" directly into the active application.

The company positions the SpeakON device as an "AI Communicator," drawing inspiration from the Star Trek "Communicator" concept, suggesting users should remain connected without needing to be at a dedicated terminal. The target audience includes professionals such as founders, managers, consultants, and field workers who may have abundant ideas but limited time for manual text input on their phones. The device is engineered to eliminate the need to unlock the phone, switch between applications, and type.

The SpeakON hardware measures 58 x 58 x 6 mm and weighs 25 grams. It is powered by a 220 mAh battery, which SpeakON rates for over 10 hours of continuous use and more than two weeks of standby time. The device charges in under 1.5 hours via USB-C. It includes 128 MB of onboard storage and has a stated audio capture range of approximately 60 cm. Each press of the button supports up to 5 minutes of continuous voice input. The product package includes a USB-C cable and a magnetic ring for iPhones that do not have MagSafe technology.

A key architectural differentiator for SpeakON is the integration of its own microphone, separate from the iPhone's system microphone. This design choice offers several advantages. Firstly, it ensures the phone's microphone remains available for other functions, preventing conflicts with applications like CarPlay, phone calls, or FaceTime. Secondly, the SpeakON app does not require continuous background microphone access, a permission that many voice tools request and users often hesitate to grant due to privacy concerns. Furthermore, because the button has its own dedicated battery and storage, it can continue to function even when the iPhone is locked or offline. Audio is buffered on the device and then synced once a network connection is re-established.

SpeakON integrates into the iOS ecosystem as a system-wide keyboard extension. This integration allows the processed text output to appear seamlessly within various applications, including Messages, Mail, and other text-input fields, effectively bypassing the need for manual transcription or cleanup of raw dictation.
