Solana Institute CEO says CLARITY Act must shield open-source developers

Kristin Smith, CEO of the Solana Foundation, urged the Senate on May 15, 2024, to ensure the CLARITY Act does not impose regulations on open-source developers. Smith stated in a blog post that open-source contributors should not be treated as financial intermediaries, a classification that could stifle innovation and impose undue burdens. She emphasized that the decentralized nature of open-source projects means individual developers often lack the resources and legal standing to comply with complex financial regulations. The CLARITY Act, currently under consideration, aims to provide regulatory clarity for digital assets. Smith's advocacy focuses on protecting the community that builds and maintains the foundational technologies of many blockchain networks, including Solana. She argued that such a broad regulatory approach could inadvertently harm the very ecosystem the legislation seeks to clarify and legitimize. The Solana Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting the Solana blockchain, is actively engaging with policymakers to shape the future of digital asset regulation.
