SSA Issues 250th Anniversary Social Security Cards in July 2026

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced plans to issue a limited-edition Social Security card to children born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026. This initiative commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence, celebrated on July 4, 2026. The commemorative cards will be functionally identical to standard Social Security cards but will feature the official "Freedom 250" logo in black ink. These cards are being distributed through the Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, which has allowed parents to request Social Security numbers for newborns during the birth registration process since 1987. Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano stated that "Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago." The semiquincentennial of the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The anniversary will be observed with various events nationwide, including The Great American State Fair, Rushmore 250 at Mount Rushmore, and Sail250, a maritime celebration featuring 60 ships from 20 countries sailing along the Gulf of America and East Coast from May to July 2026. Many Americans are also expected to celebrate privately, potentially amidst record heat waves with temperatures in the 90s to low 100s Fahrenheit across the Midwest, Texas, and the East Coast.
