Anthropic Seeks Chip Manufacturing Supplies from SK Hynix

AI developer Anthropic PBC has requested semiconductor manufacturing supplies from SK Hynix Inc., a leading global memory chip producer, with the aim of developing its own chips. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae Won disclosed this information during an AI event in San Francisco, noting the unusual ambition for an AI company to pursue in-house chip production. Chey, whose conglomerate oversees SK Hynix, highlighted the significance of Anthropic's request.

This development occurs during a visit by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to Silicon Valley, where he is attending an AI summit. The president's trip has been marked by several significant technology partnerships, including collaborations between Nvidia Corp. and South Korean entities Naver Corp. and SK Group. The announcement underscores the growing trend of AI companies seeking greater control over their hardware infrastructure to optimize performance and potentially reduce costs.

Anthropic's interest in manufacturing its own semiconductors suggests a strategic move to secure a dedicated supply chain and potentially tailor chip designs for its specific AI models.
