Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is advocating for a shift towards "sovereign AI," a concept where enterprises maintain ownership and control over their data, artificial intelligence models, and underlying infrastructure. Nadella articulated this position in an essay posted on X on July 12, 2026, highlighting concerns that businesses currently face a "one-sided relationship" with frontier AI model providers.

Nadella explained that to effectively utilize advanced AI models from third parties like OpenAI and Anthropic, enterprises must share substantial institutional knowledge. This includes sensitive information such as user prompts, feedback provided to the models, and the specific workflows employed by AI agents. He stated in his essay, "You essentially pay for intelligence twice, once with money, and again with something even more valuable: the proprietary knowledge you must reveal to make that intelligence useful." The more an enterprise seeks to improve model performance, the more proprietary knowledge it must disclose.

The current model, according to Nadella, forces companies to reveal valuable proprietary information to enhance AI capabilities, creating a dependency that could be mitigated by sovereign AI.
