‘Rush Project at Request of POTUS’

The Trump administration redirected $2.5 million from the National Park Service's repair and rehabilitation fund to pay for redecorating projects at the Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. This diversion of funds occurred in 2017, according to a report by the Department of the Interior's Office of Inspector General. The funds were initially allocated for critical infrastructure needs within national parks, such as repairing roads, bridges, and visitor facilities. The Inspector General's report, released in 2020, detailed how the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approved the transfer of funds at the request of President Donald Trump. This action drew criticism from environmental groups and park advocates who argued that it undermined the mission of the National Park Service and prioritized private commercial interests over public lands. The report highlighted that the redecorating project at the hotel, which is leased from the U.S. government, involved significant upgrades and renovations. The Inspector General's office concluded that the transfer of funds was not in accordance with federal law and regulations governing the use of the repair and rehabilitation fund. The report recommended that the Department of the Interior review its policies and procedures to prevent similar diversions in the future.
