Rivian owners file lawsuit alleging false promises on self-driving features
Rivian Automotive, Inc. faces a class action lawsuit filed by owners who allege the electric vehicle manufacturer made false promises regarding its self-driving capabilities. The plaintiffs claim that for years, Rivian falsely advertised that it would enable hands-free driving features on its first-generation R1 vehicles, including the R1T pickup and R1S SUV. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, asserts that Rivian knew these promises were unattainable due to hardware limitations in the initial models. Specifically, the plaintiffs point to statements and marketing materials that suggested the vehicles were equipped to support advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that would eventually allow for hands-free operation. However, according to the complaint, the vehicles' onboard hardware, particularly the sensor suite and processing power, was insufficient to support such advanced functionality. This alleged misrepresentation led owners to purchase Rivian vehicles under the expectation of future software updates that would unlock these capabilities, an expectation that has not been met. The lawsuit seeks damages for the purported overpayment for vehicles based on these unfulfilled promises. Rivian has not yet filed a formal response to the lawsuit.
