Reddit ChatGPT Search Citations Plummet 86%

Reddit's share of citations within ChatGPT Search experienced a significant decline of 86.4% over a four-day period, commencing on August 14, as reported by AI visibility platform Promptwatch. Prior to this sharp decrease, Reddit had maintained a relatively stable presence, accounting for an average of 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations between July 18 and August 7. However, this share plummeted to below 1% on August 14, further averaging only 0.52% through August 17. Promptwatch emphasized that its data captures the observed shift in citation frequency but does not elucidate the underlying causes, noting that the findings are provisional and subject to ongoing monitoring. An earlier, less pronounced decline in Reddit's citation share was observed beginning August 8, the same day Promptwatch indicated that ChatGPT Search altered its query fan-out behavior. This initial drop saw Reddit's citation share decrease from the high 3% range into the mid-2% range. The subsequent, more substantial decline occurred six days later, starting August 14. Promptwatch highlighted that this latter change was unique to ChatGPT, as no comparable one-day decline was detected in Google's AI products. Instead, Reddit's citation share in Google AI Overviews exhibited a gradual decrease, moving from approximately 2.5% in early July to around 2.1% in August. Google AI Mode displayed a similar pattern, with its citation share beginning a modest decline at the end of July and continuing to fall in the subsequent weeks. The analysis conducted by Promptwatch focuses on tracking Reddit's share of AI citations rather than the internal mechanisms of the AI systems themselves. Consequently, it cannot definitively explain why Reddit appeared less frequently in ChatGPT citations or whether this reduction signifies a permanent alteration in source selection by the AI platform. This development serves as a critical reminder of the dynamic nature of AI search visibility, underscoring that AI platforms can rapidly modify the sources they surface with minimal prior notification.
