Reddit Tests AI-Voice Video Feature for Text Threads

Reddit has initiated a limited experiment to transform its traditional text threads into multimedia content by employing AI voices to narrate original posts and selected replies. This new feature presents the narrated discussions as TikTok-style portrait videos, aiming to modernize the platform's user experience and capture a "background listening" audience. The original text threads themselves remain unaltered, with users able to switch between the legacy text format and the new video viewing mode via a slider toggle at the top of eligible posts. The visual presentation of these AI-voiced videos mimics the short-form content prevalent on other popular applications. When users switch to the media format, they are presented with a portrait-oriented clip where an artificial intelligence reads the discussion aloud. The screen displays screenshots of the text, with words highlighted in a karaoke-style fashion as they are spoken. To ensure transparency, a disclaimer stating "Real conversation voiced by AI" is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Currently, these early tests are deliberately restricted to text-only discussions, excluding multimedia elements such as photos or GIFs. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced this strategic direction during the company's Q2 2026 earnings call, highlighting the significant popularity of third-party creators on rival networks who narrate Reddit stories for substantial viewership. The platform's objective with this native solution is to bypass these intermediaries and offer a direct way for users to consume content. Executives expressed a desire to provide background listening options for users who prefer to engage with content while commuting or exercising, thereby reclaiming engagement that has historically migrated to competing social platforms. This experimental feature is initially rolling out to desktop browsers before its planned expansion to iOS and Android devices. Administrators are manually selecting English-language posts for inclusion in this initial testing phase. The move signifies Reddit's effort to adapt to evolving content consumption habits and leverage AI technology to enhance user engagement and platform utility. The company's strategic intent is to create a more dynamic and accessible way for users to interact with the vast repository of discussions available on the platform, potentially increasing time spent on site and attracting new demographics accustomed to video-first content consumption.
