Historic Rhode Island Compound Listed for $3 Million

A historic Rhode Island compound, known as The Grange at Potowomut, has been listed for sale at $3 million. This property, located in Warwick, RI, was constructed in 1723, predating the signing of the Declaration of Independence by 53 years. The 10.9-acre estate is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and boasts a history that extends back to 1684 when the Greene family first settled the Potowomut peninsula. The property's website emphasizes its deep roots in American history, stating it has been "at the center of American life since before America existed."

The origins of the estate trace back to John Greene, a surgeon and contemporary of Roger Williams, who sent his sons to settle the peninsula. In 1684, James II Greene built a structure on a hill overlooking the river, an area known as The Forge. His son, Jabez III Greene, subsequently built a house directly across the road on the river, which became known as The Grange. The property's description highlights that the "Potowomut peninsula was Greene family land before Rhode Island was a colony."

In recent years, the current owners have invested over $1 million in renovations and stewardship improvements to preserve the compound's historical integrity while enhancing its amenities. Dean deTonnancourt, an agent with Re/Max Revolution, is handling the listing of the property. The Grange at Potowomut retains much of its original period charm, offering a tangible connection to centuries of American history.
