Greg Brockman Donates $5.5 Million to Save Eagle Nesting Site

OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, along with his wife Anna, has contributed $5.5 million to a fundraising effort aimed at preserving the habitat of bald eagles Jackie and Shadow. This significant donation propelled a months-long campaign, spearheaded by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), past its $10 million objective with mere days remaining before a crucial land purchase deadline. The funds will be used to acquire Moon Camp, a 63-acre parcel of forest and shoreline in San Bernardino County, California, situated near the eagles' nest in Fawnskin. This land had been previously designated for development, with plans including 50 luxury homes and a marina, posing a potential threat to the eagles' environment. Jenny Voisard, spokesperson for FOBBV and the fundraising lead, expressed profound gratitude for the community's sustained support over the past six months, highlighting the community's deep affection for Jackie and Shadow's well-being and the natural surroundings. The timing of the Brockmans' gift proved particularly vital, as Jackie's health had recently been a serious concern. In mid-July, she was transported to the Ojai Raptor Center after being observed in distress on the lakeshore, engaged in a conflict with two younger eagles and exhibiting an inability to fly. Veterinary examinations revealed she was severely anemic and suffering from kidney inflammation. Although she received a life-saving blood transfusion and experienced a temporary setback, her condition improved, leading to her transfer out of the intensive care unit by late July. However, the underlying cause of her illness remained undetermined. As of Monday, the Ojai Raptor Center shared challenging news via social media, indicating a further drop in Jackie's packed cell volume (PCV) to 13%, a metric critical for assessing red blood cell concentration and oxygen-carrying capacity. This development underscores the ongoing fragility of her recovery and the importance of securing her habitat. The Friends of Big Bear Valley campaign aimed to raise $10 million to purchase the Moon Camp property, which is adjacent to the Big Bear Lake area where Jackie and Shadow have become a focal point for wildlife enthusiasts worldwide through their live nest cam. The success of this campaign, bolstered by the Brockmans' substantial donation, ensures the protection of a vital ecological area and provides a sanctuary for these iconic birds.
