AI Referrals Account for 1.1% of News Publisher Visits

AI assistants are responsible for a mere 1.1% of direct visits to news publishers, according to a comprehensive study conducted by Scrunch. The research analyzed millions of searches, AI chats, and subsequent website visits to understand the referral patterns of AI-generated content. The findings indicate that the majority of traffic to news outlets continues to originate from direct navigation by users or through conventional search engines. Scrunch's analysis revealed that news-related conversations with AI assistants correlated with continued news consumption, with readers being 20.5 percentage points more likely to visit a news publisher in the week following such a conversation compared to non-news related chats. However, this correlation does not necessarily imply that AI is creating new demand for news content. Of the visits that occurred after an AI conversation, approximately three-quarters were attributed to direct navigation. Traditional search engines accounted for about 9% of these visits, leaving the 1.1% for AI referrers. It is important to note that Scrunch's referral data captures only the final click before a website visit, making it challenging to reconstruct the complete user journey across AI interactions, searches, and subsequent website engagement. The study also examined the impact of Google's AI Overviews on news searches. Searches that included an AI Overview resulted in publisher clicks approximately 20% of the time, a figure lower than the roughly 30% click-through rate for searches without an AI Overview. When comparing identical queries with and without an AI Overview, this discrepancy narrowed to about 2 percentage points. AI Overviews were found to be most prevalent on news searches that typically generated fewer publisher clicks. During the study period, AI Overviews appeared on approximately one in four news searches, frequently for informational queries such as weather updates, market prices, and explanatory content. Conversely, sports-related searches, which generally exhibit higher publisher click-through rates, rarely triggered an AI Overview. The study also observed that larger, established publishers tend to capture the majority of follow-through visits. When an AI assistant mentioned a publisher that was not explicitly included in the user's prompt, visits to that specific publisher saw an increase of 10.6 percent, suggesting a degree of influence AI can have in directing user attention to specific news sources, even if the overall referral traffic remains low.
