One giant US power line, enough wind power for 1 million homes

The SunZia transmission project, an $11 billion initiative designed to bring wind power from New Mexico to Arizona and California, has officially come online. This project represents one of the largest clean energy transmission undertakings in the United States. Upon full completion, SunZia is expected to deliver approximately 4,500 megawatts of wind energy, a capacity sufficient to power around 1 million American homes. The project involves constructing two 500-mile high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines, which will facilitate the transport of renewable energy across long distances with minimal energy loss. The development faced significant hurdles, including a lengthy environmental review process and legal challenges, but ultimately secured the necessary approvals. The transmission lines are designed to connect remote wind farms in New Mexico to population centers in Arizona and California, thereby enhancing the reliability and capacity of the Western power grid.
