Nvidia, Microsoft Urge Open AI Models for US Leadership

Nvidia Corp. and Microsoft Corp. are spearheading a coalition of technology companies urging policymakers to champion the development of open-weight artificial intelligence models. This initiative, outlined in a letter sent on Friday, posits that an open approach to AI software is fundamental for the United States to sustain its technological leadership.

Firms such as Palantir Technologies Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. joined the call, emphasizing that open-weight models are crucial for continued innovation in AI and other vital economic sectors. These models allow users to download and customize the underlying technology, thereby increasing their adaptability and accessibility for developers and businesses. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared the letter via his new X account, with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also amplifying the message on his platform.

The coalition's appeal follows the recent unveiling of Kimi K3, an open-weight model by Chinese startup Moonshot AI, which claims parity with leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic PBC. This development has reportedly concerned investors and prompted discussions among Washington policymakers regarding potential actions against China's AI advancements. Chinese companies have a history of releasing more affordable, open models, such as those from DeepSeek, which, while typically not at the absolute cutting edge, can offer significant price advantages.

While some US AI developers, including OpenAI, do provide open alternatives, many are concentrating on proprietary systems to offset the substantial development costs. The coalition, without directly referencing China or Moonshot AI, framed its advocacy around the necessity of strengthening and preserving US competitiveness in the AI landscape. The promotion of open-weight models is seen as a way to accelerate global AI adoption, which in turn could drive demand for hardware from companies like Nvidia.
