Northrop Grumman Launches Robot to Refuel Satellites

Northrop Grumman launched a private space robot mission on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, to attach life-extending jetpacks to aging satellites. This mission, named MRV (Mission Robotic Vehicle), is part of a growing effort to prolong the lifespan of spacecraft, thereby reducing costs for satellite operators. The MRV, launched by SpaceX, will spend approximately a year maneuvering into geosynchronous orbit, located 22,300 miles above Earth. Once in position by mid-2027, the minivan-sized robot will utilize its 10-foot arms to attach a jetpack to a communication satellite that is running low on fuel. It will then proceed to two additional satellites requiring similar servicing.

The mission carries three electric-propelled jetpacks, each the size of a washing machine, which detached separately after liftoff. These jetpacks will use xenon gas thrusters to reach their orbital destinations. The MRV will then retrieve and attach these jetpacks to the designated satellites, one by one. Each jetpack is designed to provide the necessary propulsion for a fuel-depleted satellite to continue operating for several additional years, averting premature retirement.

This initiative is expected to significantly benefit satellite operators such as SES of Luxembourg and Optus of Australia, potentially saving them millions of dollars in replacement expenses. This marks Northrop Grumman's latest venture into the satellite servicing industry. The company previously launched two spacecraft in 2019 and 2020 that successfully docked with and repositioned communication satellites, granting them extended operational periods. The MRV's capabilities represent an advancement in this field, offering a more comprehensive solution for satellite refueling and life extension.
