Nicholas Daley SS27 "Sonic Tapestry" Honors Spiritual Jazz

Fashion designer Nicholas Daley has unveiled his Spring/Summer 2027 collection, titled "Sonic Tapestry," which draws profound inspiration from the Spiritual Jazz movement. This collection marks a continuation of Daley's established practice of weaving together his Scottish and Jamaican heritage with cultural history, craft, and music. The "Sonic Tapestry" collection specifically pays homage to pioneers of Spiritual Jazz, including Don Cherry, Laraaji, Gary Bartz, and Kahil El'Zabar. Daley translates the genre's improvisational spirit into a wardrobe characterized by its emphasis on texture, color, and meticulous craftsmanship. He stated that "Texture, tone, colour, intention, this season pieces together fragments of personal memory and meaningful reference." Rather than directly replicating the attire of Spiritual Jazz artists, Daley has channeled the essence of the movement through expressive color palettes, tactile fabrications, and graphics that echo the visual language of that era. A significant influence on the collection's aesthetic is the vibrant collage and tapestry work of Swedish artist Moki Cherry. Additionally, the prints, patterns, and graphics employed are reminiscent of the immersive stage sets that accompanied Don Cherry's performances, aiming to evoke a similar sensory experience. A notable textile innovation within the collection is the result of a collaboration with Chris English, a renowned quilter from West Yorkshire. English has meticulously reconstructed archival Nicholas Daley fabrics into an intricate patchwork material. This unique fabrication is featured prominently in a Harrington-inspired jacket and the brand's signature patchwork kilt, underscoring the label's ongoing dedication to principles of remaking and reusing materials. Further exploring his dual heritage, Daley has developed a custom thistle camouflage pattern. This design artfully merges Scotland's national flower, the thistle, with the Jamaican hibiscus, and appears across ripstop shirting and the newly introduced Miles Work Jean. To bring "Sonic Tapestry" to life, Nicholas Daley, in partnership with Grammy-nominated trumpeter Theo Croker, will present a live performance during New York Fashion Week in September. This event will take place over two nights, on September 15 and 16, at New York's historic Blue Note jazz club, further bridging the worlds of fashion and music.
